Iran’s foreign minister, Javad Zarif issued a statement after Iran missile attacks on US troops and coalition forces.

In his tweet on Wednesday, he wrote, “Iran took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of UN Charter targeting base from which cowardly armed attack against our citizens & senior officials were launched.”

“We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression”, Mr. Zarif said.
According to the United Nations’ Article 51, a member state can defend itself following an armed attack until the Security Council steps in.
However, the US officials hold responsibilities for Gen Soleimani’s death.
Tensions between the United States and Iran intensified in recent weeks when protesters stormed the United States embassy compound in Baghdad.
General Qassem Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike last Friday.
Iran promised retaliation for the general’s death leading to concerns of full-scale war in the region.
