Manchester: England's star batter, Joe Root, has surpassed legendary Australian cricketer Sir Don Bradman's decades-old record, marking another significant milestone in his illustrious Test career.
Root's exceptional form continued as he notched a magnificent century on Friday, the third day of the fourth Test against India in Manchester.
Root's 38th Test century, a stellar innings of 150 runs in response to India's first-innings total of 358, was instrumental in achieving this feat. With this century against India, Root now holds the record for the most centuries scored against a single opponent on home soil, breaking Don Bradman's long-standing record.
This was Root's ninth century against India on his home ground, surpassing Bradman's eight centuries against England in Australia.
Furthermore, Root has also become the batter with the most Test centuries (12) against India. His remarkable innings in the fourth Test also saw him climb to second place among the all-time leading run-scorers in Test cricket, overtaking Australia's Ricky Ponting.
Ponting had amassed 13,378 runs in 168 Tests, a record Root eclipsed in just his 157th Test match.
The all-time leading run-scorer in Test cricket remains former Indian legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests. Root's consistent performance continues to etch his name into the annals of cricket history, solidifying his position as one of the game's greats.
