A South Memphis woman, Robbie Woods, is living in constant fear as vehicles frequently crash into her backyard from Interstate 240.

In a harrowing incident on Monday morning, a pickup truck veered off the interstate and plowed into her yard. “He was right there at my steps,” Woods said, recalling the injured driver’s condition. “He was in bad shape.”

Since moving into her home on Cummings Street three and a half years ago, Woods has witnessed about 15 accidents. “I’m 65 years old. I’m not moving no more, this is it,” she declared, emphasizing her determination to stay despite the dangers.

Her property, separated from I-240 by a broken chain-link fence, has been the site of multiple crashes, including some that resulted in fatalities. “It was a man and a lady; the lady, she died,” Woods said. She also recounted a teenager’s flipped sports car and another crash where “a guy… died that hit right here at this corner.”

Woods now fears for her family’s safety. “My grandkids can’t even come back here and play,” she lamented. Urging officials to act, she pleaded, “Give us some protection back here to save our homes.”

The Tennessee Department of Transportation is yet to respond to her request for stronger barriers.
