DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor said that the detailed verdict on former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf has proven as unethical and inhumane.

DG ISPR stated while addressing an important press conference that we will defeat internal and external enemy.

DG ISPR further added that Army is not just an institution but a family and we know how to maintain the honor and dignity of the country as well as the honor and dignity of our institution.

It is pertinent to mention that this was the important press conference after the death sentence of former president and military ruler General Retired Pervez Musharraf.

Pakistan Army Reaction

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, in a statement issued following the verdict in the high treason case against Musharraf , said decision received with lot of pain and anguish.

DG ISPR said an ex army chief who fought for country can never be a traitor.

“The due legal process seems to have been ignored including constitution of special court, denial of fundamental right of self defense, undertaking individual specific proceedings and concluding the case in haste.”

He said armed Forces of Pakistan expect justice will be dispensed according to Constitution.

Death sentence

Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth headed the bench and took up the high treason case.

Three of the two judges supported the verdict.

On behalf of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, the prosecution team, led by Advocate Ali Zia Bajwa, preyed upon the court to amend the indictment against the former military ruler.

According to the verdict, Pervez Musharraf had violated the constitution on November 3, 2007.

Verdict stated that violation of constitution proved against Pervez Musharraf and he awarded death penalty under Article 6.

The high treason case against the former president for clamping the state of emergency on Nov 3, 2007.

The case has been pending since December 2013.

Although the special court had announced that it would deliver its verdict in the case today.

However, the government’s prosecutor, Advocate Ali Zia Bajwa, said they had submitted three petitions today.

Moreover, DG ISPR tweeted the press release about the statement on decision by special court about General Pervez Musharraf.

What is Article 6

Article 6 of the Constitution says:

“Any person who abrogates or subverts or suspends or hold in abeyance, or attempts or conspires to abrogate or subvert or suspend or hold in abeyance the Constitution by use of force or show force or by any other unconstitutional means shall be guilty of high treason.”

Earlier, the press conference, scheduled on 11 December postponed.
