After a week of discussions, telecommunications firms in Pakistan have reached an agreement to start the blocking of SIM cards belonging to individuals who have failed to file their taxes. This decision follows discussions connecting the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and telecom service providers.

The government targets to conflict tax elusion and improve tax agreement among the population. This move aligns with Income Tax General Order No. 1, authorizing the blocking of SIM cards for non-filers. Initially hesitant, telecom companies have now committed to gradually implementing this measure, starting with the blocking of SIM cards for 5,000 individuals.

Moreover, telecom operators will notify exaggerated individuals about the impending blockage of their SIM cards. The FBR identified over 500,000 non-filers for the tax year 2023, and their SIM cards will face suspension as a penalty. These measures highlight the government's resolve to ensure tax compliance and bolster revenue collection efforts.

Blocking SIM cards serves as a means to enforce tax rules and promote equitable tax contributions. The government anticipates that these measures will incentivize greater tax compliance and foster a more reasonable tax system for all citizens.
