ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has fixed the hearing for the PTI intra-party election case on June 6.
This case involves the internal elections of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party, which have been a subject of controversy.
A five-member bench will conduct the hearing, and the ECP has issued notices to PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan and the party's Central Information Secretary Rauf Hassan.
Previously, the ECP had to delist the case on May 30 due to the unavailability of a bench. The notice for the next hearing was deferred until now. The ECP had initially raised seven objections regarding the intra-party elections conducted by PTI on March 3, 2024.
This case follows a series of legal challenges and decisions. Notably, on January 13, the Supreme Court upheld the ECP's December 22 decision, which declared the PTI's intra-party elections unlawful, leading to the party losing its 'bat' electoral symbol.
Akbar S. Babar, a founding member of PTI, has been instrumental in these legal proceedings, having filed multiple petitions challenging the validity of PTI's internal elections.
In the latest developments, Babar filed petitions on March 6, 2024, seeking the annulment of the PTI's recent intra-party elections held on March 3.
These petitions are based on the ECP's prior decision and the Supreme Court's affirmation, which questioned the legality of PTI's internal electoral process.
The upcoming hearing on June 6 will be crucial in determining the legitimacy of PTI's internal elections and addressing the objections raised by both the ECP and Akbar S. Babar.
