ISLAMABAD: The federal government has officially discontinued the electricity subsidy for consumers using up to 200 units per month as of Tuesday.
This change means that, starting in October, consumers in this category will face rates between Rs9 and Rs29 per unit, with no additional relief in their electricity bills.
Protected consumers using up to 50 units will now be charged Rs9.39 per unit, while those consuming between 51 and 100 units will pay Rs13.64 per unit. For households using between 101 and 200 units, the rate will rise significantly to Rs29.21 per unit.
Additionally, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has introduced a revised policy for late bill payments. Under the new policy, a 5% surcharge will be applied to payments made within three days after the due date, and a 10% surcharge will apply to payments made after this grace period. Previously, a uniform 10% surcharge was applied to all late payments.
Consumers who pay their bills within the three-day grace period will not be subject to any surcharge, providing some flexibility. This new structure is intended to offer more leniency compared to the previous uniform 10% late payment fee.
