An important announcement regarding fines for delayed vehicle registration was made during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior.
Reports indicate that the committee reviewed a notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad on August 2, which imposed fines on late vehicle registration for vehicles ranging from 1,000cc to 3,000cc.
The DC informed the committee that Rs260 million had been collected in fines for delayed registrations. In response, committee member Tariq Fazal Chaudhry suggested abolishing these fines.
The DC also noted that increasing motorway fines to Rs2,500 had successfully reduced violations. Committee member Zartaj Gul proposed consulting experts to address registration challenges.
Committee Chairman Khurram Shehzad Nawaz inquired about the possibility of suspending the notification, but a Ministry of Law representative clarified that the committee lacks the authority to do so.
The committee instructed the DC Islamabad and the Car Association to collaborate and find a solution.
Additionally, the committee approved the Coast Guard Amendment Bill, while discussions on the Naturalization Act Amendment Bill and the Criminal Law Amendment Bill were postponed to the next meeting.
Separately, in October 2024, the Sindh government announced the launch of online vehicle registration and transfer services starting January 1, 2025.
The initiative, discussed during a meeting of the Excise and Taxation Department led by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, aims to simplify the process.
Citizens will be able to register and transfer vehicles and pay motor vehicle taxes online, enhancing convenience and ensuring transparency by eliminating cash transactions, according to a statement from the department.
