The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has revealed plans to introduce a facial recognition verification service through its Pak-ID mobile app and at its registration centers across the country, starting January 15, 2025.
The move is aimed at modernizing the biometric and identity verification process. A consultative conference at NADRA’s headquarters gathered regulators and officials from various sectors to discuss ways to improve the system.
Key topics at the conference included the challenges in identity verification and strategies to enhance services for citizens. NADRA’s chairman highlighted the difficulties faced by pensioners and elderly citizens due to faint fingerprints and stressed the need for technological solutions to address these issues.
The introduction of facial recognition technology was praised, with many recognizing its potential to improve access to services and eliminate delays. NADRA's spokesperson confirmed that the new service would be available at registration centers as well as through the Pak-ID app, ensuring convenience for users.
The conference also touched upon the possibility of integrating iris recognition technology into the verification process, discussing both its potential benefits and challenges.
