Despite facing economic challenges, Pakistan's mobile industry has shown impressive growth and resilience, as highlighted in the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority's (PTA) annual report from January 2019 to September 2023. The industry produced a significant 84.4 million mobile devices during this period, with local companies contributing by manufacturing 25 million smartphones in the last five years.
The success is attributed to the Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Regulations introduced in 2021, which facilitated the establishment of 33 manufacturing plants, involving both local and foreign companies. In December 2022, Pakistan achieved a noteworthy milestone by exporting 120,000 SEEGO brand mobiles labeled as "Manufactured in Pakistan," marking a significant entry into the global market.
A crucial factor in supporting local manufacturing and ensuring market integrity is the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) introduced by the PTA. This system has not only contributed to government revenue but has also addressed issues such as stolen and non-compliant International Mobile Equipment Identities (IMEIs). DIRBS has successfully blocked 758,113 stolen IMEIs and identified and blocked 35.5 million non-compliant IMEIs, including 7.3 million duplicate or cloned numbers.
Despite economic difficulties, these developments highlight the resilience and positive direction of Pakistan's mobile industry. The combination of regulatory support, local and international investment, and initiatives like DIRBS has not only stimulated domestic production but has also positioned Pakistan as a competitive player in the global mobile market.
