Dehli riots: Sikh father-son duo risk their lives for saving Muslims

Mohinder Singh and his son Inderjit Singh helped in transporting Muslims to a safer location after the situation getting out of hand in their Hindu-dominated neighbourhood of Gokalpuri in northeast Delhi.

According to International Media, 53-year-old Mohinder Singh and his son made 20 trips on Bullet motorcycle and a scooty to transport their Muslims neighbors to the nearest Muslim locality of Kardampuri, just a kilometre away.

Mohinder Singh said “We don’t think we did anyone a favour, we didn’t do it for praise or for thanks, we did it because it was the right thing to do.”

He furthert said “I have lived through the hell that was 1984. Those memories have been revived.”

It is to be noted that the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, also known as the 1984 Sikh Massacre, was a series of organised pogroms against Sikhs in India in response to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.

The ruling Indian National Congress had been in active complicity with the mob, as to the organisation of the riots.

After the assassination of then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi on 31 October 1984 by two of her Sikh bodyguards, anti-Sikh riots erupted the following day.

They continued in some areas for several days, killing more than 3,000 Sikhs in New Delhi and an estimated 8,000 – 17,000 or more Sikhs were killed in 40 cities across India.
