North India faces extreme heatwaves as temperatures hit 50°C

A prolonged heatwave continues to disrupt normal life in parts of northern India. On Thursday, temperatures soared past 45°C in many states, reaching 48.8°C in Barmer city, Rajasthan. The Indian Meteorological Department predicts the heatwave will persist until Wednesday. The spike in power consumption has led to water and electricity shortages in several regions.

On Wednesday, Delhi experienced its highest peak power demand in history, reaching 8,000MW. The Indian capital is enduring a brutal heat spell, with temperatures hovering around 45-46°C throughout the week.

Weather experts report that the heat index, or the apparent temperature, has exceeded 50°C due to high humidity levels. In response, hospitals in the city have established special facilities to treat the increasing number of patients with heat-related illnesses.

Rohit Nair, 34, an advertising professional in Delhi, finds the heat unbearable.

"I just feel exhausted the entire day. Delhi is boiling this year," he says.
