Assembly Approves 27th Constitutional Amendment, Government Introduces New Revisions to Constitution
ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Wednesday approved the 27th Constitutional Amendment with a two-thirds majority, marking a historic step in Pakistan’s legislative process.
The session, chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, saw Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar present the amendment bill. He said constitutional amendments are part of an evolutionary process, and the key points of the 27th Amendment had already been discussed in the Senate.
The government introduced eight new changes in the amendment, removing four clauses and adding four others. A clause-by-clause vote followed, and all 59 clauses were approved.
A total of 233 members voted in favor, while four opposed. Later, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq announced that the 27th Amendment was approved overall with 234 votes.
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) voted against the amendment, and lawmakers took turns leaving the House during the voting.
Previously, the Senate had also approved the 27th Amendment with a two-thirds majority. The amendment, including the additional changes made by the National Assembly, will now be sent back to the Senate for final approval.
