Donald Trump now has a $100 million weapon to use against democracy in the United States. The defeated and disgraced ex-President’s huge war chest, nearly all amassed within six months of leaving office, was built on his ravenous calls for cash from supporters bought into his delusional lie that the 2020 election was stolen.

Critics have pointed that that Trump has created many of the political committees and charitable organizations, staffed by hundreds of former administration employees and allies, that appear to be focused on maintaining his electoral comeback aspirations and taking revenge on Republican congressional opponents. These organizations have been aggressive in generating funds, often with misleading appeals to the party’s base, as surveys reveal.

Just days after his defeat last November, Trump launched a new political action committee, dubbed Save America, that together with his campaign and the Republican National Committee quickly raked in tens of millions of dollars through text and email appeals for a Trump “election defense fund”, ostensibly to fight the results with baseless lawsuits alleging fraud.

According to public records, the fledgling Pac had raised $31.5 million by the end of the year, while Save America spent no money on legal fees during the same time period. Save America, which is run by Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s 2016 campaign manager, spent barely $340,000 on fundraising expenditures last year.

In another move, Trump said last month that he will file class-action lawsuits against Facebook, Google, and Twitter, citing “censorship” as a result of the platforms’ restrictions in the aftermath of the 6 January Capitol attack, which Trump helped incite. However, some legal experts criticized the cases, calling them frivolous and a fundraising gimmick.

While Trump’s anti-democratic tactics may alienate millions of Americans in a general election, and some Republicans may want for a change, he is already the overwhelming favorite for the GOP nomination in 2024, having persuaded a large minority that he was unfairly ousted. Republican-controlled states have rushed to rewrite election rules in a way that punishes Democrats and makes it more difficult for them to vote.
