Islamiat will be a compulsory subject from Grade I to Grade V, according to the new curriculum, while non-Muslim students would learn Religious Education in place of Islamiat.

The Punjab Cabinet has recently approved the Single National Curriculum.

The public sector and partner schools of the government run by the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF), will taught the books prepared by the federal government from Grade I to Grade V, whereas the private schools can teach books prepared by the private publishers but those too will have to be approved by the Punjab Textbook Board.

The Single National Curriculum is being developed in three phases. The Phase I will focus on the development of SNC and textbooks for Pre I-V classes, while the Phase II will focus on developing a curriculum for Grade VI and Grade VIII and would be implemented from March 2022.

Moreover, the Phase III will aim at developing a SNC and textbooks for Grade IX and Grade XII and the same would be implemented from March 2023.

The SNC is based on standards, benchmarks and outcomes from all subjects in contrast to the 2006 curriculum in which standards, benchmarks and learning outcomes were not developed for each subject.

In 2006, Islamiat was integrated with General Knowledge up to Grade II and was taught as a separate subject from Grade III onwards.

In the SNC, Islamiat will be taught as a separate subject from Grade I up to Grade XII.

Previously, the subject of Ethics was designated for non-Muslim students in lieu of Islamiat from Grade III onwards. Now, a new subject Religious Education has been introduced for non-Muslim students from Grade I onwards for the five minority groups of Pakistan.

The SNC aims at equipping students with the principles and attributes, including truthfulness, honesty, tolerance, respect, peaceful coexistence, environmental awareness and care, democracy, human rights, sustainable development, global citizenship, personal care and safety.

It will also focus on the development of analytical, critical and creative thinking through a more activities-based approach rather than static teacher-centric learning.

The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has been integrated in the curriculum for the first time.

The 2006 curriculum was implemented only in the government schools and some low-cost private schools, whereas the Single National Curriculum will be implemented across all boards in Pakistan, including the government and private schools and Madrasas.

Former dean of the Faculty of Education, Punjab University, Hafiz Muhammad Iqbal, told BOL News that though it was a laudable step of the Punjab government but it still needs certain improvements.

The curriculum will have far reaching effects on the society if all the private schools implement the same in letter and spirit, he said.

“It will be a revolutionary step towards a better Pakistan if the SNC is implemented in letter and spirit across all the provinces,” he added.
