A former US Navy SEAL who left the service over four years ago was murdered while fighting in Ukraine, according to a military spokesperson.

According to a statement from the Navy, Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Daniel W. Swift was killed in Ukraine on Wednesday. The military was abandoned by Swift on March 11, 2019.

Swift’s involvement in the fighting was not specifically mentioned in the statement.

We cannot speculate as to why the former Sailor was in Ukraine,” the Navy said.

According to a Navy spokesman, Swift had his Trident pin removed, a serious measure used when a Trident Review Board deems a sailor no longer meets the qualifications to be a Navy SEAL.

The recent death of a US soldier fighting in Ukraine was acknowledged by the US State Department, but no other information regarding the circumstances was provided.

“We are in touch with his family and providing all possible consular assistance,” a State Department spokesperson said. “Out of respect for the privacy of the family during this difficult time, we have nothing further to add.”

According to Swift’s service record, he entered the Navy in 2005 and finished Navy SEAL training in 2006.

He received honors and decorations for his service in Iraq and Afghanistan throughout his stint in the military.

A mysterious hiatus in service from the start of 2014 to the end of 2015 is also noted on his record. His most recent duty began in August 2016 and involved a West Coast Special Warfare Unit.
