The scientists from United States (US) have developed a new technology “genetic word processor” similar to DNA, sources said on Wednesday.

This technology enables to accurately re-write the genetic code as well as it is a new way of editing the code of life which could correct 89% of the errors in DNA that cause disease.

The system, called “prime editing,” is capable of directly editing human cells in a precise, efficient, and highly versatile fashion.

The approach expands the scope of gene editing for biological and therapeutics research, and has the potential to correct up to 89 percent of known disease-causing genetic variations.

Along with the team of scientists, Dr. David Liu says that there are about 75,000 different mutations that cause illness in human beings.

According to Dr. Liu, 89% of DNA errors can be corrected in this way, which causes diseases.

Scientists said that it is a very versatile and precise technology but also stress the research is only starting.

Dr. Liu is the senior author of a paper published today in Nature describing prime editing.

The research was also led by first author Andrew Anzalone, a Jane Coffin Childs postdoctoral fellow in Liu’s lab at the Broad Institute.
