In a statement, he wrote: ‘I have lived exactly as I’ve wanted to up until now. For 21 years, I’ve been working running around as a company president, causing lots of people to worry along the way, but also receiving a lot of love and support from people, too.

‘I’m sure I’ve been able to acquire my share of money, social status, and fame along the way. But now I’m restarting my life.

Maezawa said he initially felt both “embarrassment and pride” and actually considered rejecting Musk’s offer but decided to accept after realizing the opportunity might not come around again.
