Singapore’s panda couple Kai Kai and Jia Jia become parents for the first time
Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) has announced the country’s first panda birth as giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia gave birth to a cub on August 14.
This cute fluff ball weighs 200g and was conceived via artificial insemination during the pandas’ seventh breeding season.
River Safari’s beloved panda pair Kai Kai and Jia Jia entered their seventh breeding season in April 2021.
WRS’s panda care team worked jointly with China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda (CCRCGP), who suggested performing the process of artificial insemination on Jia Jia when it was established that natural mating cannot occur, to gain her chances of implantation before Jia Jia become infertile.
WRS also urged China to increase the loan to take care of giant panda pair Jia Jia and Kai Kai for another term, so that the adorable panda couple may stay on at their home River Safari exhibit for a few more years.
13 years old Kai Kai and 12 years old Jia Jia arrived in Singapore from China in September 2012. The panda couple is in Singapore’s River Safari on a 10-year loan from China.
