BMW offers 55% discount on i3 electric sedan

BMW made headlines recently with a jaw-dropping offer on its i3 electric sedan, selling it at a massive 55% discount in Zhejiang Province, China.

A local dealer listed the i3 for just 159,000 yuan (about 20,700 euros), which is more than half the regular price. This eye-popping deal, however, isn’t as simple as it seems.

The steep discount is primarily due to the Zhejiang government’s subsidies for electric vehicles, alongside the dealer’s efforts to clear out stock of the 2024 i3 model.

The 2025 model, released in September, has already become available, creating a surplus of the older version. The i3, which is available only in rear-wheel drive, faces stiff competition from local electric vehicle makers, driving BMW to offer these massive discounts to stay competitive in China’s fast-evolving market.

Although the 55% discount promotion ended quickly, BMW i3 sedans are still being sold at significant discounts, with the 2025 model priced between 255,000 and 298,000 yuan (33,000 to 38,800 euros). The Chinese market’s pressure has also led to changes in BMW’s production strategy.

The company has temporarily halted production of its iX3 crossovers at the Brilliance-BMW plant for about a year. During this time, BMW will prepare to assemble new-generation models on the upcoming Neue Klasse platform.

While the huge discounts were a rare opportunity, BMW’s move underscores the fierce competition in China’s electric vehicle market, where even global giants like BMW must adapt to survive.
