Electric vehicle (EV) giant Rivian has announced its intention to introduce advanced autonomous driving technologies in the near future. The company plans to roll out a hands-free driver assistance system in 2025, followed by an “eyes-off” system in 2026, CEO RJ Scaringe revealed to Reuters.
The partially autonomous driving system will allow drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel next year, with further enhancements enabling drivers to take their eyes off the road in 2026. Scaringe emphasized the substantial value these features will bring to Rivian customers, giving them newfound freedom during commutes.
These developments emerge as competition intensifies among leading automakers striving for breakthroughs in autonomous driving technology. Recent advancements in the field, such as lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control, have already pushed the boundaries of smart driving systems.
Scaringe highlighted that these innovations are designed to provide drivers with “time back,” enabling activities like making calls, reading, or emailing while behind the wheel. He noted that the company is “hyper-focused” on refining such transformative features.
Currently, Rivian equips its Generation 2 vehicles with the “Rivian Autonomy Platform.” While the platform automates many driving tasks, it still requires drivers to remain attentive and maintain control of the vehicle. The upcoming systems aim to further revolutionize the driving experience by elevating autonomy to new heights.
