Volkswagen to launch affordable electric vehicle next month
Volkswagen is set to introduce a low-cost electric vehicle (EV), priced at approximately €20,000 ($20,800). This budget-friendly EV is expected to be the much-anticipated ID.1, a model Volkswagen has been teasing since 2022.
If launched at this price, it will be one of the most affordable EVs, competing with models like the Nissan Leaf, which starts at over $28,000.
Volkswagen’s cheapest EV in the US is currently the ID.4, priced at around $40,000. However, a leaked concept image suggests the new model might be called “ID.one”, aligning with the company’s plans for an entry-level EV.
Volkswagen has confirmed a 2027 launch, which matches previous announcements regarding the ID.1. In addition, Volkswagen is also developing another budget-friendly EV, the ID.2all, expected to be priced at €25,000 ($26,000).
Both vehicles will use an upgraded version of Volkswagen’s modular battery platform, already seen in models like the ID.4 and ID Buzz.
To improve its financial position, Volkswagen is cutting costs, including a recent agreement with a German labor union to reduce its workforce by 35,000 employees, saving billions of dollars annually.
With these new developments, Volkswagen aims to make electric vehicles more accessible and strengthen its position in the growing EV market.
