He was appointed and posted as Commander of Peshawar Corps in August 2022. He replaced Lieutenant General Faiz Hamid who was posted as Corps Commander Bahawalpur.

On 25 November 2020, Major General Sardar Hassan Azhar Hayat was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. He has an impressive command and staff career in the military.

After being promoted, he was appointed Military Secretary at GHQ. He has also served as Commander of GOC-7 infantry division in Miranshah, North Waziristan. His retirement is due in November 2024.
