Early life and Education

Shahid Waheed was born on 25th December 1966. He is the son of renowned jurist late Justice Abdul Waheed, who was a vibrant member of the District Judiciary. His father was a judge of the Lahore High Court and authored several landmark judgments.

Shahid Waheed completed his graduation from Government College, Lahore in 1986. He received his LLB from the University of Punjab in 1989. He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in International Affairs and International Trade Laws (WTO).

Legal Career

He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Punjab Bar Council on 27th May 1990. He obtained a license to practice in the Lahore High Court in 1992 and became an Associate of Advocate Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmad.

During his legal practice, Shahid Waheed handled numerous cases encompassing civil, criminal, taxation, corporate, trademark, revenue, labour, service, arbitration, and constitutional jurisdiction.

He assisted the high courts in the interpretation of different laws and principles of jurisprudence which have been reported in various law journals. He has also dealt with arbitration cases particularly relating to large public sector organizations such as WAPDA.

He had been a legal advisor to the Collectorate of Customs, Sales Tax & Central Excise, Red Crescent Society, and many multinational and local companies and educational institutions

Besides legal advisor, he had also been a Standing Counsel for a large number of banks, private and public limited companies such as WAPDA, NTDC, HBFC, MCB, UBL, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), and Agricultural Development Bank of Pakistan (ADBP).

He holds life membership of the Lahore District Bar Association, Lahore High Court Bar Association, Tax Bar Association, and Supreme Court Bar Association. He enrolled as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2003.

Lahore High Court

Shahid Waheed was elevated as Judge of the Lahore High Court on 27th March 2012. Apart from his services as a judicial officer, he has assisted in drafting different Acts/Ordinances and Rules. He also served as Liaison Judge for former judges of the high court.

He is a Member of the Administration Committee and has a supervisory role in several other committees.  He is also a Member of the Land Acquisition Committee which deals with acquiring land for the lower judiciary for the construction of courts and residences of judicial officers.

He was the President of the Rule Committee (CPC) for amendments in the First Schedule of Civil Procedure Code, 1908. He is a Member of the Rules Committee for amendments to high court rules and orders.

He has served as an Inspection Judge of districts Bhakkar, Sialkot, Jhang, Vehari, Gujrat, and Sargodha. He served as Administrative Judge of Intellectual Property Tribunal, and member and chairman of Punjab Subordinate Judiciary Service Tribunal.

He also served as Chairman Enrolment Committee of the Punjab Bar Council, and Member of the Recruitment Recommendation Committee for Lahore High Court and District Judiciary.

Other supervisory administrative tasks include Administrative Judge of the Punjab Livestock Tribunal, Punjab Revenue Appellate Tribunal, Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Tribunal, Labour Courts, Family Courts, Official Receivers, and LHC Research Centre.

He was a member of the Examination Committee and introduced reforms for a transparent mechanism for conducting departmental examinations and recruitment of judicial officers in Punjab. He also spearheads the Recruitment Committee of the LHC.

Under his supervision and guidance, Lahore High Court Research Centre (LHCRC) issues the fortnightly ‘Case Law Bulletin’ of the latest judgments of the High Courts of Pakistan and foreign courts.

Justice Shahid Waheed is currently the fourth most senior judge of the LHC. In June 2022, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial recommended his appointment as an apex court judge.

In case his is not elevated, Justice Shahid Waheed will serve as a judge of the Lahore High Court till his superannuation on 24 December 2028.

He has a keen interest in education and was a visiting faculty in Punjab College of Law and Himayat-e-Islam Law College.

He has served as a legal adviser in the Inter-Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC), Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education of Punjab, University of Punjab, University of Education, and Punjab Board of Technical Education.

As a judge, he serves as a Member of Syndicate at the University of Punjab, Member of Syndicate and Selection Board of the University of Education, and Member Board of Trustees and Syndicate of LUMS University.

He has attended a large number of law conferences and seminars in Pakistan. He led the delegation of judges to the United States to attend USPTO Global Intellectual Property Academy and exchanged views on the protection of Intellectual Property Rights.
