The Security forces in Brazil have foiled the shipment of 70,000 tonnes of illegally mined manganese scheduled for China on Sunday.

According to the local media, authorities seized 70,000 tonnes of illegally mined manganese that four companies were preparing to ship to China from a northern port.

The media reported that the seized illegally mined manganese worth $10 million.

The National Mining Agency (NMA) said the seizure took place at Porto de Vila do Conde close to the city of Belem in northern Pará state.

Furthermore, it was reported that manganese piled at the port will be auctioned and the companies have taken to court, NMA said.

Manganese is usually found in combination with iron ore and is used to improve stainless steel. Brazil is a major producer and most of its ore is sold to China.
