Karachi as a city has topped the list of the cities from where most taxes were collected in the year of 2018.

According to the data released by the government in the sixth tax directory of parliamentarians, the Federal Board of Revenue collected the highest amount of income tax, more than Rs425 billion from Karachi in 2018.

The data was collected by the FBR on the basis of income tax returns filed by salaried and non-salaried individuals, companies as well as Association of Persons (AOPs).

The government had collected Rs209bn from Karachi alone followed by Rs 204 billion from Islamabad and Rs 180 billion from Lahore in the financial year ending June 30, 2018.

The income tax collected from Karachi’s five districts — Central, East, West, South, and Malir — is mentioned under separate heads.

The break-up of the tax collection showed that Rs9.05 billion was collected from Karachi Central, Rs34.09 billion was collected from Karachi East, Rs 114.22 billion from Karachi South, and Rs 28.89 billion was collected from Karachi West.

The federal capital remained the second-highest tax-paying city as its resident and companies deposited Rs 204.14 billion during 2018, whereas, Lahore remained in the third position as it collected Rs200.71 billion during the tax year 2018.

The collection from Lahore was recorded Rs 180.58 billion; Lahore Cantonment Rs 5.27 billion, and Lahore City Rs14.86 billion.
