ISLAMABAD: The food group exports witnessed an increase of 26.91 per cent during the first four months of the current financial year 2021/22, compared with the exports of the corresponding period of the last year, the latest data of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed.

The country exported food commodities worth $1.434 billion during July-October (2021/22), compared with the exports of $1.130 billion during July-October (2020/21), showing a growth of 26.91 per cent.

The commodities that contribute in positive growth included rice export, which increased 19.04 to $594.528 million from $499.442 million during the period under review, while the export of tobacco increase to $11.420 million from $8.375 million, showing a growth of 36.36 per cent.

The export of fruits rose 21.29 per cent to $143.242 million from $118.101 million, whereas the export of vegetables witnessed a nominal increase of 2.01 per cent to $68.372 million from $67.028 million.

Similarly, the spices export also surge 18.83 per cent to $31.391 million from $26.417 million, while the oil seeds, nuts and kernals exports increased 804.52 per cent to $84.853 million from $9.381 million.

The export of meat and meat preparations increased 2.60 per cent, as its exports increased to $104.558 million from $101.907 million last year, while all other food items exports rose 68.81 per cent to $299.650 million from $177.510 million, it added.

However, the commodities, which contributed in the negative growth included fish and fish preparations, whose exports decreased 21.05 per cent to $96.384 million from 122.089 million,

Meanwhile, on a year-on-year basis, the food group exports also increased 28.16 per cent to $414.720 million during October 2021, compared with the exports of $323.590 million last year.

On a yearly basis, the exports of rice increased 22.99 per cent; fruits, 15.80 per cent; Tobacco, 19.48 per cent; spices, 26.29 per cent; oil seeds, nuts and kernals, 664.10 per cent; and all other food items, 58.86 per cent.

However, the exports of fish and fish preparations decreased 9.72 per cent; vegetables, 26.66 per cent; and meat and meat preparations, 0.96 per cent.

On a month-on-month basis, the exports of food commodities also increased 15.41 per cent in October 2021, compared with the exports of $359.331 million in September 2021.

On a monthly basis, the exports of rice rose 19.87 per cent; fish and fish preparations; 23.16 per cent; fruits, 7.46 per cent; vegetables, 47.61 per cent; tobacco, 30.13 per cent; oil seeds, nuts and kernals, 21.35 per cent; and all other food items, 51 per cent.

However, the exports of meat and meat preparations decreased 8.56 per cent; and spices, 12.97 per cent, it added.

The country’s total merchandise exports surged 24.94 during the first four months of the current fiscal year, compared with the corresponding period of the last year.

The exports during July-October (2021/22) were recorded at $9.462 billion against the exports of $7.573 billion during July-October (2020/21).

The imports into the country also surged 65.40 per cent, as these grew to $25.101 billion during the current fiscal year from $15.176 billion last year, the PBS data added.
