UN joins EU in denouncing Twitter’s suspension of several journalists.

Reporters for the NYT, CNN, and WP were locked out.

UN tweets that media freedom is “not a toy” EU threatens Twitter with sanctions.

Twitter said the bans are connected to live location data sharing.

UN Undersecretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming was “very troubled” by claims that journalists were “arbitrarily” suspended from Twitter.

She said, “Media freedom is no game.” “A free press is a critical instrument in fighting harmful disinformation in democratic countries.”

EU commissioner Vera Jourova warned Twitter of punishment under Europe’s new Digital Services Act, which mandates “media freedom and fundamental rights.”

“Musk should know this. It’s forbidden. Soon penalties “said.

Mr. Musk has not explicitly commented on the bans, but he tweeted, “Criticizing me all day is great, but doxxing my real-time whereabouts and endangering my family is not.”

The software tycoon later set up a poll asking if he should unsuspend the accounts “immediately” or “in seven days,” hinting the decision could be reversed soon.

“Same doxxing regulations apply to ‘journalists’ as to everyone else,” he said, referring to the internet publishing of private information.

New York Times spokesman: “questionable and unfortunate.”

Musk pledged to sue the owner of a profile that tracks his private jet.

He claims a “crazy stalker” used live location sharing to find his children in Los Angeles.

The German Foreign Office reminded Twitter after the suspensions that “press freedom can’t be toggled on and off.”
In October, Mr. Musk bought Twitter for $44bn.

The billionaire told marketers he bought the site to “assist humanity” and “give civilization a digital town square.”

He changed moderating techniques. Civil rights advocates say the billionaire’s actions will boost hate speech, misinformation, and harassment.

The EU’s new Digital Services Act might be used to penalize Mr. Musk’s business over the account bans.

Under the proposed new law, the EU Commission can punish a corporation with up to 6% of its global revenue for breaking its rules.

The EU could petition a court to ban a rogue service if it “refuses to comply with important requirements and endangers life and safety.”

Matt Binder, a Mashable journalist banned, didn’t know why.

He told the BBC, “I’ve been critical of Musk.” He added Mr. Musk’s assertion “that everyone who got suspended was doxxing him owing to the jet tracker” was false.

He claims he never tweeted a tracker link but mentioned the account after it was suspended.

“Clearly the suspended accounts were handpicked because hundreds each minute tweeted the link.”

Mr. Binder, a Twitter user since 2008, was astonished by the ban on journalists.

“I knew it was possible but felt he wouldn’t since it would ruin his free speech platform’s image.”

NBC News executives decided to pull misinformation reporter Ben Collins from broadcasts owing to his tweets criticizing Elon Musk.

Mr. Musk later spoke to journalists on Twitter Spaces, which permits live audio discussions, but after answering a few questions regarding the ban, he left and Twitter Spaces has since been suspended.

Twitter suspended Mastodon, an alternative to Twitter after Musk’s takeover.

Links to Mastodon accounts appeared prohibited. Twitter or its partners “identified” Mastodon URLs as “possibly dangerous.”
