Atlas Honda, a prominent motorcycle manufacturer in Pakistan, has unveiled its first electric vehicle (EV) motorcycle, the Honda BENLY e. The company, however, hasn’t specified when the EV will be available in Pakistan. The launch event took place at Atlas Honda’s Sheikhupura factory, marking the company’s 60th year in Pakistan.

Noriaki Abe, Chief Officer of Motorcycle and Power Products at Atlas Honda, mentioned that the Honda BENLY e will undergo test marketing, and future products will be based on market feedback to provide the best options for society and customers.

The collaboration between Atlas Group and Honda Motor Company, ongoing since 1963, has been crucial in the manufacturing of motorcycles and auto parts, contributing significantly to daily life in Pakistan.

Atlas Honda, with the largest network of local auto parts manufacturers and dealers in Pakistan, provides employment to over 150,000 people through its 10,000 touchpoints.

Despite being the market leader, the motorcycle industry, mainly catering to the low-income segment, faced a decline in sales in October, with Atlas Honda recording a 5% decrease in sales to 90,000 units compared to the previous month and year.

Challenges for the motorcycle industry in Pakistan include a lack of charging points for the increasing demand for EV bikes. To facilitate this transition, the government needs to invest in charging infrastructure and collaborate with the private sector for funding.

EV bikes in Pakistan also encounter obstacles like high costs, limited range, and unclear EV policies. In the first four months of the fiscal year, motorcycle sales saw a 10% decline year-on-year to 371,000 units due to increased bike prices and customers’ low purchasing power.
