On Wednesday, the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) marked a historic milestone as the KSE-100 index surged past the 72,000 mark for the first time.

The index reached 72,335 points during the early trading session, reflecting a remarkable increase of 976 points from the previous day’s closing.

Market analysts attribute this bullish trend to several factors, including the anticipation of a new bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Pakistan’s current account surplus, rising foreign investment, and a notable increase in IT exports have also contributed to the positive sentiment in the stock market.

Notably, key sectors driving the market’s performance include oil and gas, banking, fertilizers, and cement. The robust performance of these sectors has further bolstered investor confidence.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb recently expressed optimism about securing a new loan from the IMF.

In an interview with The National, he stated that discussions with the IMF have been constructive, indicating a potential for a larger and longer-term program.

Pakistan has formally requested an IMF bailout package ranging from $6 to $8 billion under the Extended Fund Facility, with the prospect of additional support through climate financing.

However, the specifics regarding the size and timeline of the package are expected to be finalized in May 2024, following consensus-building discussions.
