KARACHI: The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has begun charging consumers for conical baffles as part of its geyser campaign, affecting millions of customers within its 3.2 million network. Many consumers have received additional bills of Rs 2,085, regardless of whether they have geysers installed, causing widespread concern.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) clarified that the installation of conical baffles is mandatory for safety and to help lower gas bills. Consumers who were wrongly charged, despite not having a geyser, are encouraged to file complaints with SSGC or OGRA.
SSGC officials stated that surveys were conducted before applying the charges, which were approved by OGRA, and contractors have already started installations. The company urges customers to visit their nearest Customer Facilitation Center (CFC) if they have concerns.
This initiative is part of the government’s energy conservation plan, introduced by the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) in January 2023. The conical baffles are designed to reduce gas consumption by up to 45%, potentially lowering gas bills by up to 25%.
