The Motion Picture Association gave Blonde, which stars Ana de Armas as the renowned actress and pinup model the unusual adults-only rating. Allegedly for “some sexual content” on Wednesday.

“It’s a challenging movie,” director Andrew Dominik told Screen Daily in February. While predicting the film, which is based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, will receive an NC-17. If the audience doesn’t like it, then that’s the audience’s fault. It isn’t a campaign for public office. It’s an NC-17 film about Marilyn Monroe, which is exactly what you’re looking for, right? I’d like to witness the Marilyn Monroe story in its NC-17 version.”

The renowned 2000 novel by Joyce Carol Oates is a 700-page dramatised account of Monroe’s life, termed “the classic study of American stardom” by The New Yorker.

Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale, and Julianne Nicholson will star in Blonde. The picture was rumoured to be premiering in May, however it is no longer scheduled for the month.

If Blonde is released in theatres before being released on streaming, the NC-17 rating may pose a problem for some theatres that have previously been hesitant to show films with that rating. Netflix, on the other hand, frequently works with smaller indie chains. Which may not have the same objections, so it’s not as crucial as a major studio film reliant on a wide release. In any event, Netflix has yet to make an official announcement on a debut date or plan.
