According to the Hollywood Reporter, comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage while performing a stand-up act in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.
The comic was performing at the city’s Hollywood Bowl venue for the “Netflix Is A Joke” comedy festival when he was attacked, according to the newspaper, which cited video evidence of the event published on social media.
The video shows an anonymous individual attempting to tackle the comedian, who has recently drawn criticism for transphobic remarks, to the ground before being apprehended by security authorities.
The Los Angeles Police Department did not issue an official statement about the event.
Chappelle, the 2019 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recipient, has been accused of ridiculing members of the transgender community in his comedy specials, most notably in “The Closer,” which provoked protests from campaigners who argued it fostered prejudice.
In March, US comedian Chris Rock was beaten on stage at the Oscars by actor Will Smith for making a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, moments before. (AFP)
