Elvis, which had its world debut on Wednesday at Cannes Film Festival 2022, earned a 12-minute standing ovation, the longest of the festival thus far. The Baz Luhrmann-directed film’s cast and crew gathered at the festival to celebrate its world premiere.

On social media, a footage of actor Tom Hanks from the night has surfaced. Tom was shown in the 45-second video making sure it wasn’t him who was in the limelight, but rather the film’s star actor, Austin Butler.

In the video, Tom directs the camera operator to shoot Austin rather than himself. In the footage, a tearful Austin gives Tom a side hug while the two actors speak into one other’s ears. During the standing ovation, the audience continued to shout.

Apart from lead actor Austin Butler, who plays the titular singer, actor Alton Mason, who plays Little Richard, was in attendance at the Elvis premiere. Colonel Tom Parker is played by Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks in the film.

Tom’s action during the standing ovation footage drew a lot of attention on Twitter. One reader said, “Tom Hanks is so sweet for drawing the attention of the camera man towards Butler,”  another user tweeted, “I love this part.”

Austin’s adventure was also praised by another admirer, who said, “I can’t imagine what Austin Butler is feeling because as someone who grew up as a teen cute boy on Disney and nickelodeon. From not being taken seriously, to now getting this recognition and a 12-minute-long standing ovation at one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world…deserved.”

Elvis, which follows Elvis Presley throughout his life, is one of the most anticipated films at Cannes 2022, with Sharon Stone, Shakira, Kylie Minogue, and Diplo among the stars on the red carpet. Priscilla Presley, the late singer’s wife, was also present for the Elvis premiere at Cannes’ Grand Theater Lumiere.
