Helen Skelton former husband’s family has spoken out for the first time since their breakup last month.

Richie Myler, a rugby league full-back or half-back for Leeds Rhinos, celebrated his 32nd birthday on Saturday, the same day Skelton, 38, returned to our television screens after a brief hiatus following the breakdown of their eight-year marriage.

He made his third appearance of the season in Leeds’ 24-6 triumph over Wakefield at Elland Road on Friday evening, as Rohan Smith earned his first win as Rhinos head coach.

It was the ideal present for Myler since he had the backing of his sister, Rachel, who wrote him a nice birthday message on Instagram calling him the “best big brother” and that she’s “proud of who you are.”

She captioned a snapshot of herself and Myler: “Happy birthday to the bestt big brother a sister could ask for. I love you so much and am proud of who you are.”

Following an emotional message on her Instagram story in April, Skelton revealed she and her husband are no longer together.

Myler has been seeing Sophie Thirkill, the daughter of the Super League club’s president, for a few days now.

Skelton posed with their three children – Ernie, six, Louis, four, and daughter Elsie Kate, who was born in December – for Hello! magazine in January, but Myler has yet to publicly remark on the breakup.

Skelton had taken a vacation from presenting since learning of their split to focus on herself. She had been away from her duties on BBC One’s Countryfile, but she returned to Channel 4 to cover rugby league on Saturday lunchtime.

The former Blue Peter broadcaster was filling in for main anchor Adam Hills, who has returned to Australia to be with his family, for Hull KR’s Super League meeting with Catalans Dragons – a team Myler used to play for.

Skelton’s comeback to television was well received by fans.

One user said: “I do love @HelenSkelton! Fantastic presenter and is so passionate about our ace game.”

“Great to see Helen Skelton is still presenting the Rugby League on Channel 4,” another impressed fan said, adding: “I’m sure it can’t be easy for her given recent events but she always does a great job because she’s a top quality professional.”

One fan commented: “Nice to see @HelenSkelton presenting the rugby.”
