Tilda Swinton said Saturday that the world needs stories now more than ever as her fantastical new fable “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” directed by George Miller of “Mad Max,” premiered at Cannes.

Swinton plays an academic who frees a djinn (played by British actor Idris Elba) from a bottle she discovers in an Istanbul market and grants her three wishes.

Swinton said at Cannes that it was appropriate for a film “about having a variety of angles.”

“The thing about stories that is dangerous is when you only have one story,” she said at a press conference.

“It’s so clear now, especially in the last few months, that… when people only hear one story, things go downhill fast,” she said, referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“It’s critical that we keep our ears and hearts open,” she said.

On a lighter note, the film crew was confronted with the inevitable question of what three wishes they would grant if given the opportunity.

“I wish I had a better answer for that exact question,” Elba chuckled.

“My second wish is that the audience takes away from this film that we learn from stories and that this is an unusual way to tell a story.”

“My third wish is for an electric Ferrari,” he added, drawing laughter from the reporters.

Miller is the acclaimed Australian director behind films such as “Mad Max,” “Babe,” and “Happy Feet.”

Given that his new film celebrates centuries-old myths, he was asked about Hollywood’s current obsession with superhero franchises and whether they would last.
