On Saturday, 22,000 people were anticipated to attend a musical celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s historic Platinum Jubilee, with millions more expecting at home.
The “Platinum Party at the Palace” is the centrepiece of the third day of public celebrations marking the 96-year-old monarch’s unprecedented 70-year reign.
Diana Ross, a Motown superstar, will perform on a purpose-built 360-degree platform outside the head of state’s central London residence, Buckingham Palace.
In a striking departure from the jubilee’s first two days, the event also features Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli and James Bond composer Hans Zimmer.
The pomp and ceremony of the Trooping the Colour military procession marked the sovereign’s formal birthday on Thursday.
The highlight on Friday was a traditional Church of England thanksgiving service led by senior royals – including the homecoming of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan – in the hallowed environs of St Paul’s Cathedral.
Saturday’s show, which will be aired live, will be no less spectacular.
However, because this is an open-air event, all eyes will be on the sky and the unpredictable British weather to see if the predicted downpours hold off.
