The trailer for Apple TV+’s Black Bird has been released.
The six-episode thriller stars Ray Liotta in one of his final performances.
Taron Egerton plays Jimmy Keene, who is sentenced to ten years in a minimum-security prison.
Jimmy’s father, Big Jim Keene, is played by Ray Liotta, who died in late May at the age of 67. He tells his kid at the opening of the trailer, “I never wanted this for you. I wanted a totally different life — a steady paycheck, kids, a family.”
Dennis Lehane, the creator of Black Bird, stated in a tribute to Liotta that he developed the character of Big Jim with the actor in mind and that working with him on the series was the “culmination of a lifetime ambition.”
Lehane wrote, “And the performance he gave? It was a master class. He wholly embodied a man who realizes that his lifetime of cutting corners and flitting along the edges of corruption have hung an albatross of very bleak options around the neck of his own son.” Added, “But as deeply flawed and compromised as the character is, Ray found the nobility in a man who would run into a burning building for that same son and never break his stride.”
Black Bird is based on a true event told by James Keene and Hillel Levin in their book In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption. Egerton, director Michaal R. Roskam, Richard Plepler (via his Eden Productions); Imperative Entertainment’s Bradley Thomas, Dan Friedkin, and Ryan Friedkin; EMJAG Productions’ Alexandra Milchan and Scott Lambert; Kary Antholis; and James Keene are among the executive producers.
