Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won the extended Thanksgiving weekend box office with an estimated $64 million over five days, beating predictions by a couple of million dollars.

The House of Mouse’s last animated production, the action-adventure Strange World, on the other hand, flopped with only $18.6 million.

Wakanda Forever grossed $181 million in its first weekend and $66 million in its second weekend. With a $64 million third weekend, the film’s domestic total now stands at $367 million, with a global total of over $650 million.

In 2018, the first Black Panther picture, also directed by Wakanda Forever’s Ryan Coogler, grossed $700 million domestically and $1.3 billion internationally.

Wakanda Forever has now surpassed fellow Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder at the domestic box office, and is on track to surpass Doctor Strange’s $411 million lifetime total in the coming weeks.

Thanksgiving has historically been a successful period for animated Disney productions; Frozen II grossed $125 million during the same week in 2019.

Which makes Strange World’s $18.6 million opening all the more remarkable. Was it a result of a lack of publicity, or a pre-planned ploy to generate interest in the film’s imminent streaming release? It’s a difficult question to answer. However, when a $180 million film opens at this low, doubts will be raised.

Strange World fell short of its initial $40 million five-day estimates. That would have put it on level with last year’s Encanto, which became even more popular when it was distributed on Disney+ a month after its theatrical launch. Strange World is set to debut on Disney+ around the holidays.

In more upbeat news, Netflix’s unprecedented countrywide release of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery grossed an estimated $13.3 million in its extended run in around 650 cinemas.

Glass Onion, a sequel to director Rian Johnson’s popular 2019 murder mystery Knives Out, will play in special one-week-only engagements in the country’s top three cinema chains before arriving on the service next month.

Devotion, starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, was also a flop for Sony. The Korean War drama, directed by J.D. Dillard and budgeted at a projected $90 million, earned an estimated $9 million for a fourth-place finish.

While it is the top-performing new movie this week, the film’s large budget implies that celebrations will have to be postponed, or at the very least moderated.

Searchlight’s dark comedy The Menu finished out the top five, adding $7.3 million since Wednesday to bring its domestic total to $18 million.

Elsewhere, Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans reached seventh place with $3.1 million over five days in little over 600 cinemas, while director Luca Guadagnino’s cannibal romance Bones and All generated an estimated $3.4 million over five days in over 2,700 theatres.

Wakanda Forever has a clean route before of it in the coming days, before James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water hits theatres next month. You can watch our interview with Coogler here, and keep an eye on Collider for additional news.
