The hit AMC television series The Walking Dead came to an end with its November 20 series finale, “Rest in Peace,” after 12 years and 11 arduous seasons. The original series’ 90-minute conclusion, however, didn’t provide much closure for viewers because spinoff projects based on fan favourites are already in the works. A sneak peek at one of the more frightening zombie combat teams visiting New York City can be seen in the new teaser trailer for The Walking Dead: Dead City.

The six-episode spinoff series, which is expected to premiere in April 2023 and is set two years after the main show’s finale, is focused on Maggie (Lauren Cohan, The Boy) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Grey’s Anatomy). Since Negan joined the show and brutally murdered Maggie’s husband, Glenn, these characters have been at odds with one another for a long time (Steven Yeun, Minari). Surprisingly, the two have been able to work well enough together since Negan turned into one of the good people that they are now co-starring in Dead City.

The Dead City teaser shows Maggie and Negan venturing into post-apocalyptic Manhattan, which was long ago cut off from the mainland. Alongside scenes revealing the ever-evolving walkers, the teaser shows the two working together and even a clip of them walking by graffiti saying, “Dawn Lincoln Center Come Kill With Us.” Eli Jorné is on board (The Walking Dead) as the showrunner for the series, and its official synopsis reads, “The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.”

“Eli has created a chaotic, beautiful, grimy madhouse of the dead for Negan, Maggie, and fans of the show eager to discover an unseen and insane world of the TWD Universe,” the franchise architect Scott Gimple said in a recent statement. “Lauren and Jeffrey have always been fantastic collaborators and now, we bring that collaboration to the next level with a series that will take these characters to their limits with the world — and each other. All of us are thrilled to take you on an all-new, all-different TWD epic for the ages.”

Dead City is not the first time AMC has ventured outside of its flagship series to explore the world of the undead, and it most certainly won’t be the last. Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Tales of the Walking Dead, and most recently, a teen-focused version of the show, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, were all created as a result of the show’s fervent popularity.

The saga of The Walking Dead will continue with two other programmes in addition to Dead City: Darryl Dixon, which stars Norman Reedus (The Boondock Saints), who will reprise his beloved role, and Rick Grimes and Michonne, who will have their own spinoff series aptly dubbed Rick & Michonne.
