As praise for the most recent MCU production continues to stream in, James Gunn (The Suicide Squad) has expressed his admiration for Pom Klementieff (Avengers: Infinity War) and her role of Mantis in the new Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Gunn expresses gratitude for the early favourable reviews of the forthcoming Guardians film in a tweet and calls notice to those that highlight Klementieff’s portrayal of Mantis. Mantis may be seen in a behind-the-scenes photo posted by Gunn with Christmas trees on her antennas. Dave Bautista’s (Army of the Dead) Drax is visible in the background. Despite the fact that Mantis has now appeared in other MCU productions, Gunn considers this to be her official debut.

“I’m especially grateful for all the raves about Pom Klementieff’s performance as Mantis. This is Mantis’ true debut as her full-fledged self in the MCU, out of the background & out of the shadow of Ego.” Gunn tweeted.

Mantis initially appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017, where she was introduced as the villain Ego’s (Kurt Russell) servant. After escaping his control, she later joined the Guardians and has since engaged in numerous battles with the Avengers

Marvel’s Phase 4 is expected to come to a close with the upcoming Christmas special from writer-director Gunn. In their first solo film since 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which was another well-liked adventure for the outcast crew, The Guardians are back. Despite the fact that this is the first Guardians movie since then, they have appeared in a number of MCU films, including Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022 and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

Drax and Mantis embark on a journey together in the new film, which serves as a precursor to the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, in order to lift their commander, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), up. Following the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Peter is left without his partner and teammate Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Drax and Mantis therefore decide to send him a Christmas present in the shape of Kevin Bacon (Tremors), who portrays a more heightened version of himself in the special. This results in a lighthearted, endearing story that serves as a stand-alone MCU production and is free to ignore the more significant, global concerns now affecting Marvel’s characters.
