King Charles ‘tried his best’ to be an ‘amazing’ single parent to Prince William and Prince Harry, after Princess Diana’s 1997 death.
Prince Harry told Oprah Winfrey in 2021 that his father Charles had ‘let him down,’ but royal expert Katie Nicholl defends the 74-year-old monarch’s parenting style, especially after Diana’s death.
Nicholl told “Charles was a great single dad.” Anyone who hasn’t been there can’t imagine…”
“Not least with the world’s media assessing how good you are, how much you’re around, and how in touch you are with your teenage children,” she added.
Nicholl noted that King Charles’ trials as a single parent were even more pronounced as he raised his teenage sons in public; William and Harry were 15 and 12 when Diana died.
“Charles dealt with many of the ups and downs many parents face – Harry going off the rails, underage drinking. Nicholl: “He did his best in a tough position.”
“He took – and still takes – his role as father very seriously. His parenting style is different, but equally loving, devoted, and committed. Everyone I interviewed for my book The New Royals said he’s a great father to William and Harry, Nicholl said.
The comments come months before Prince Harry’s bombshell memoir Spare comes out in January 2023; royal fans worry he may further sully King Charles and Prince William.
