Al Strobel, an actor best known for playing the enigmatic Phillip Gerard on Twin Peaks, has passed away. At 83, Strobel.

On behalf of Strobel’s family, Twin Peaks producer Sabrina Sutherland released the following statement: “Through the darkness of future past and much sadness we say goodbye to Al Strobel. He is an irreplaceable human being and will always be an important part of our Twin Peaks family.”

On social media, the Twin Peaks cast and crew posted heartfelt tributes to Strobel. Mark Frost, a co-creator of Twin Peaks, reflected on “what a warm and wonderful gentleman he was,” and Dana Ashbrook, a co-star, called him “the sweetest of men…a wonderful storyteller” and expressed awe at his one-handed cigarette rolling skills.

Strobel, who was born in 1939 in Seattle, Washington, lost his left arm at the age of 17 due to a motor vehicle accident. Before being chosen to play one-armed travelling shoe salesman Phillip Gerard in the David Lynch-directed ABC series in 1989, he had worked as an architect and a stage actor.

Gerard makes his first appearance in the pilot episode of the show and later appears in ten other episodes. It was eventually discovered that Mike, a spirit resembling Laura Palmer’s murderer Bob, had possessed Gerard; however, he had cut off his own arm to free himself from its evil influence.

When he recites the eerie poem, Gerard provided one of the series’ most memorable moments “The magician yearns to see through the shadows of past futures.

One calls out, “Fire walk with me between two worlds.” “In the second season of the show, the persona helped to solve Palmer’s murder. Both Lynch’s 1992 theatrical prequel Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Showtime’s 2017 revival of the series Twin Peaks: The Return featured Strobel reprising his role as the character, guiding Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) after a protracted absence from our world.

Along with Billy Zane and Grace Zabriskie from Twin Peaks, Strobel co-starred in the 1990 science fiction film Megaville.

He also appeared in the 2001 horror film Ricochet River, which marked Kate Hudson’s feature film debut, and the USA Network horror film Child of Darkness, Child of Light.

By the early 2000s, Strobel had given up acting, but he came back for Twin Peaks: The Return. In Eugene, Oregon, where he had been residing, he passed away. We are thinking of his friends and family.
