The Weeknd teases new ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ music
James Cameron's sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, hits theaters December 16....
Black Adam, a movie from Warner Bros. and DC Films, has spent six weeks in theatres and is currently in the middle of a seventh; as a result, its most recent earnings this weekend are not particularly impressive.
The Dwayne Johnson-led DC Comics adaptation made an estimated $2.7 million over the weekend from 74 markets, bringing its total international earnings to $219.0 million and its worldwide (domestic and overseas) total to $384.0 million to date. The final significant market to see the release of Black Adam this weekend was Japan.
Compared to previous Dwayne Johnson-starring films, Black Adam’s weekend opening in Japanese theatres performed well, bringing in an estimated $1.2 million across 338 screens.
With this amount, the movie outperformed Johnson’s disaster epic San Andreas and Skyscraper in Japan over the weekend by a margin of +159% and +88%, respectively.
With Black Adam proving to be a high point of the actor’s career in some ways, this box office total represents yet another honour for Johnson. Johnson’s performance in Black Adam was his biggest domestic box office debut as a leading man, and the movie has since surpassed Shazam!, another DC Comics adaptation that made $366 million worldwide.
The good news for Johnson ends there, though, as the 15-year-long endeavour has fallen short of the high standards one would expect from a franchise film with a rumoured $150 million budget.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the main competition for Black Adam at the box office, has surpassed the global gross of the DC movie with domestic box office receipts alone in just three weeks.
While this is unsurprising given the momentum of Marvel Studios’ projects relative to DC films, it is still a resounding defeat.
In addition, Black Adam hasn’t performed well in comparison to other DC productions like the infamous Justice League, which despite negative reviews from both fans and critics, managed to earn an estimated $658 million worldwide.
Similar to Justice League, Black Adam introduced a group of superhero characters; in this case, it was “The Justice Society,” and it was hoped that this would be a turning point in the development of the DC film franchise.
Despite the return of Henry Cavill as Superman, it seems like Black Adam might be another false start for the DC movie universe.
The movie also stars Pierce Brosnan, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Quintessa Swindell, and Sarah Shahi in addition to Johnson.
With new DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran now tasked with developing the franchise’s future, it is unclear how Black Adam will fit into DC’s future plans for cinema releases.
However, Black Adam is still showing in theatres right now.
