Los Espookys, a bilingual comedy programme on HBO Max, has been removed from the list of returning programmes.

Sources reports that the streamer has cancelled the programme as a result of the second season’s weak ratings following a protracted hiatus.

Although the Spanglish series struggled to draw in the minimum viewership numbers required by HBO to keep it afloat, Season 2’s premiere received favourable reviews from critics.

Los Espookys, which is set in Mexico City, follows a group of eccentric friends who are so knowledgeable about horror that they decide to make money off of their interest by fabricating horror movie-like scenarios to deceive their intended audience.

According to Nielsen data, each of the first season’s six episodes received an average of about 156,000 live viewers since its June 2019 premiere.

A month later, the show was renewed for a second season. However, the COVID pandemic slowed down production, which made it take nearly three years before the Season 2 premiere in September 2022.

When Season 2 finally debuted, viewership figures had been cut in half, suggesting that the show’s ability to thrive had been negatively impacted by that protracted slump.

According to a statement from HBO, “We are thrilled we could finally deliver the unique and hilarious second season of Los Espookys to viewers, more than three years after the series premiere, due to pandemic delays.”

“We are grateful to Julio, Ana, and Fred for creating this imaginative and delightfully bizarre world. Although a third season is not currently in the works, we would be happy to collaborate with this cast and crew again in the future.

It is safe to say that Los Espookys’ cancellation is not indicative of the show’s quality given its perfect 100% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and it is satisfying to see that HBO has acknowledged this with its decision to continue working with the show’s co-creator Julio Torres, who along with fellow co-creators Ana Fabrega and Fred Armisen made up the show’s main cast.

HBO and Torres had a first-look agreement that is still in effect. As part of that agreement, Torres is currently working on two streaming services, including Little Films, a comedy series, and Lucky, a coming-of-age drama.

Along with José Pablo Minor, River L. Ramirez, Giannina Fruttero, Carmen Gloria Bresky, Eudora Peterson, Greta Titelman, Sam Taggart, Spike Einbinder, Kim Petras, Isabella Rosellini, and Yalitza Aparicio, Los Spookys also starred these actors.

Along with Alice Mathia and Lorne Michaels of Broadway Video, Armisen, Fabrega, and Torres served as executive producers. Sharon Lopez and Andy Garland served as producers, and Nate Young served as co-executive producer.

The screenplay was created in collaboration with the show’s creators by Bernardo Britto and Mara Vargas Jackson.

HBO Max still offers access to Los Espooskys seasons 1 and 2.
