Maximilian, Margrave of Baden, who was the first cousin of King Charles III, has died. He was 89.

The House of Baden said on Thursday that Max, who went by the name Margrave Maximilian Andreas Markgraf von Baden, had died at Salem Castle in Germany. Max’s mom was Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark, who was the older sister of Prince Philip. This made King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward his first cousins.

“Since 1963, Max Margrave of Baden has been head of the house at the head of the former ruling Grand Ducal Baden Princely House, which from 1112 to 1918 provided the sovereigns in the Baden part of what is now the federal state of Baden-Württemberg,” the statement said.

Theodora and Margrave Berthold had Max in 1933. He was born prince of Lake Constance. He attended Gordonstoun School with Prince Philip and King Charles. The couple married in 1966. Bernhard, the couple’s son, now controls the House of Baden.

Max became a margrave when his father died. He revitalised land near Lake Constance, which boosted the Markgraf von Baden winery.

GermanAid-Baden was founded in 1982, per Baden’s House. A refugee charity. Max loved history. He renovated Salem Castle and cathedral. After serving in the Bundeswehr, he became a reserve officer and was promoted to colonel in 1990.
