Ryan Murphy’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story continues to grow in popularity on Netflix. After dominating the streamer charts since its debut, the series has now reached a staggering 1 billion hours viewed.

It is now one of three series in the streamer’s history to reach that milestone in less than 60 days, joining global juggernaut Squid Game and Stranger Things 4.

Murphy had the top spots on Netflix’s viewing charts firmly locked down for a long time, beginning with Monster’s release on September 21.

The Evan Peters-led true-crime series got off to a fast start, becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched series in its first two weeks, with 496 million hours watched and 56 million households tuning in.

It steadily crept up the streamer’s all-time viewership charts while maintaining an iron grip on the Global Top 10 and even reigned as Nielsen’s top streamed series for three weeks before Murphy’s other true-crime darling, The Watcher, came in and surpassed it.

By the end of its run, Monster had spent seven weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10, appeared in the Top 10 in 92 different countries, and ranked second all-time in the Most Watched English TV list.

Murphy’s victories just keep coming in, making his five-year contract with Netflix seem more and more worthwhile every day. One of the two projects he’s working on that has spent three weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 is Monster.

The other, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, which Murphy only worked on as a producer on, also debuted in the top 10 in 91 different nations.

Due to the resounding success of his two new true-crime series, he has also been able to secure renewals for Monster and The Watcher, with the former being transformed into an anthology series that will follow multiple serial killers.

Including Monster, Ian Brennan, Murphy’s partner, has contributed significantly to his success on Netflix. The two don’t lack for content on the streaming service, but Monster represents a new high for them, and it’s simple to understand why.

Because true crime has audiences hooked, the Milwaukee Cannibal’s story was depicted in high-quality by the show’s creators.

The rest of the main cast, which also includes Richard Jenkins, Molly Ringwald, Michael Learned, Penelope Ann Miller, Colin Ford, Shaun J. Brown, and Niecy Nash, is also excellent. Peters garners most of the attention for his terrifying portrayal of Dahmer.

However, Monster is not without its detractors. The rise of the show has been dogged by controversy after controversy, most of which are related to how it dramatises Dahmer’s life and its disregard for the victims.

Some victims’ families were never informed about the show’s creation, so they were unaware when it debuted. The fact that the series’ main character, the cannibalistic murderer Dahmer, belonged to the LGBTQ+ community led to Netflix drawing criticism for classifying it as an LGBTQ show.

Even those who worked on the series weren’t happy with the results because allegations of racist treatment on the set followed the show’s premiere.

The hope is that Murphy and Brennan will take Monster’s criticisms to heart when writing the next two seasons in order to make the show and the set more respectful. Murphy has largely upheld the significance of honouring the victims.

Right now, the entire Netflix streaming version of Dahmer is available.
