According to reports, Netflix’s own climate consultants have questioned why the streaming giant released the trailer for the documentary of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the day before Prince William’s Earthshot Prize presentation.

Netflix climate experts reportedly filed complaints with the streaming company after a teaser was broadcast.

Some viewed the timing of the trailer’s release as controversial considering the significance of the event, which awards £1 million to projects aimed at saving the environment.

The Sunday Times reports that members of Netflix’s scientific advisory council have complained to the business over the teaser.

Former UN chief of climate change Christiana Figueres, who serves on Netflix’s advisory board and chairs the Earthshot board, expressed disappointment.

Chief Executive Officer of the Earthshot Prize, Hannah Jones, described the occasion as the Prince of Wales’ “World Cup” moment.

It is alleged that Netflix, and not Harry and Meghan, made the decision regarding the trailer’s release date.

According to the same source, Ms. Figueres, a key player in the 2015 Paris climate agreement, stated: “Netflix has been a leader on producing valuable content to educate on environmental issues. It is therefore disappointing that they air negative messages on the very same day as the Earthshot Prize.”

Tom Rivett-Carnac, a former United Nations political strategist who serves on Netflix’s advisory board and advises the Earthshot team, complained to the streaming service’s leadership.

He said: “The remarkable finalists and winners of the Earthshot Prize are changing the world. They deserve all attention and recognition so the timing of this release from Netflix, a sustainability content leader, is profoundly disappointing.”
