As 2022 draws to a close, Pakistani women accomplished great things. Many people excelled in their fields and made us proud of their strength, commitment, and hard work.
Let’s learn more about the Pakistani ladies who set new standards in 2022 without further ado.
Justice Ayesha Malik
Ayesha Malik was sworn in as Pakistan’s first female Supreme Court judge in a historic decision. Malik is renowned for her groundbreaking decision from January 2017 that banned the two-finger virginity test that had previously been applied to assess victims of sexual assault and violence. Malik had been a judge of the Lahore High Court since March 2012 before being promoted to the nation’s highest court.
Dr. Tasnim Ahsan
The distinguished Endocrine Society’s Laureate Award for 2023 was given to Dr. Tasnim Ahsan, becoming the first Pakistani woman to accomplish so. The physician from Karachi who received the “International Excellence in Endocrinology Award” was chosen for it because of her accomplishments and contributions to the field of treating disorders involving hormones. She currently serves as the endocrinology faculty’s secretary at Karachi’s College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Hina Rabbani Khar
When Pakistan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar arrived in Kabul to meet with her Afghan colleague Amir Khan Mutaqqi, she garnered media attention.
Khar’s journey was documented in videos and images that were widely praised on social media, especially by figures like filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. She took office as Pakistan’s first female foreign minister in 2011 at the age of 33, making her the youngest person to do so.
Dr. Mahwish Sharif
In May 2022, Dr. Mahwish Sharif of Pakistan joined the tuberculosis ward at the Fatima Jinnah General & Chest Hospital in Quetta. He was the first deaf physician in Balochistan. She was born deaf and overcame prejudice for years to complete medical school. Dr. Mahwish is from a small village in the Kachi area in central Balochistan.
Samina Baig
In July 2022, mountaineer Samina Baig conquered the second-highest peak in the world—K2—becoming the first female Pakistani to do it. The first Pakistani woman to climb Mount Everest and the Seven Summits is Baig, a Gilgit-Baltistan native. Following her successful ascent of Everest in 2013, she received the government’s “Pride of Performance” medal. As part of a seven-person local team, the 31-year-old summited the 8,611-meter (28,251-foot) peak early on Friday. Naila Kiani, a second Pakistani woman who lives in Dubai, followed hours later.
Bismah Maroof
On the 75th anniversary of the nation’s independence, Bismah Maroof, the captain of the Pakistani women’s cricket team, received the esteemed Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, the fourth-highest civilian honor in the nation. She gained notoriety in June 2022 for amassing the most runs for the women’s cricket squad in both ODI and T20I formats.
Shafiqa Iqbal
Shafiqa Iqbal, a 24-year-old data engineer, joined Google Poland’s Warsaw office this year. From a pool of 1,300 applicants, she was reportedly the only Pakistani hired. Iqbal received her degree from the Punjab University and was employed by Google through LinkedIn while she was working as a data engineer in Lahore. While serving as the Global Ambassador of Women in Tech for Pakistan, the engineer was also a top-rated seller on Upwork.
