We see the main protagonists, Ryhei Arisu and Yuzuha Usagi, going deeper into the rabbit hole after the first season of Alice in Borderland ended on a cliffhanger.
The Netflix show, based on the popular manga written and illustrated by Haro Aso, tells the story of random people chosen from Tokyo and transported to a world known as the Borderland.
Each player must compete in a series of lethal games in order to survive and return to their own world.
Co-stars Kento Yamazaki (Arisu) and Tao Tsuchiya (Usagi) will solve the mysteries in Shibuya, the first season’s setting, which is now densely packed with overgrown plants.
Only Shuntar Chishiya, played by Nijir Murakami, and Hikari Kuina, played by Aya Asahina, survived with Arisu and Usagi.
The games, each associated with a playing card, drive the players insane. The difficulty level is determined by the suit and number of the card in play. Since all games except face card missions have been completed, the games are expected to be more dangerous this time around.
In the previous season’s cliffhanger, a special broadcast revealed that Mira Kano (Riisa Naka), a former executive of Borderlands’ former safe haven known as the beach, was one of the game masters. Mira, now revealed to be the Queen of Hearts, also announced that the games’ next stage would continue.
Yamazaki confirmed the appearance of the King of Spades in an interview with Gamerbraves. He went on to say that the surviving characters will find themselves clashing with the villain and his henchmen all over the cityscape, while the two main characters’ relationship will strengthen.
The trailer also reveals that the main characters’ backstories will be revealed. Still, questions remain about the Borderland’s existence and whether or not these games will end.
Other returning characters include Aguni Morizono (Sho Aoyagi) and Suguru Niragi (Dori Sakurado), as well as a few new cast members such as Tsuyoshi Abe as Keiichi Kuzuryu, Tomohisa Yamashita as Kyuuma Ginji (the King of Clubs), Yuri Tsunematsu as Akane Heiya, Isomura Hayato as Sunato Banda,
During the lockdown, the show gained popularity alongside other dystopian shows in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. It also made the Top 10 trending list in Germany, France, Portugal, and Austria.
Season 2 of Alice in Borderlands will premiere on Netflix on December 22, 2022.
